The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) is a public, co-educational research University consisting of 80 registered research groups. It is based primarily in Bucaramanga, Colombia. It is the largest by student population (24,000) and the top ranking University in north-east Colombia. The University was founded in 1948. Its main campus hosts the faculties of Sciences, Engineering, and Humanities, the second campus hosts the Faculty of Medicine. The University also has 5 satellite campuses across the region. The University offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with 124 academic programs, which includes 21 Master and 6 Doctorate (Ph.D.) programs. The University’s Guatiguará Technology Park (GTP) promotes the creation and growth of ventures and institutions based on technology.
Research Center for Sustainable Development in Industry and Energy-CIDES- was founded in 1988. It was the first research center of the Industrial University of Santander (UIS), recognized by the Superior Council in 1992, and is one of the pillars of the first PhD. programs and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in Colombia. In total CIDES supported completion of 18 PhD and 52 Master studies and produced hundreds of chemical engineers. Nowadays the Research center has 4 Professors, 11 Ph.D. and 18 Master students and about 50 undergraduate students. In the last five years the Centre published more than 50 articles in international journals and a patent.

Research Topics

The Center has worked with main Colombian companies and research institutions, including ECOPETROL, ICP-Ecopetrol, CENICAÑA, CENIPALMA, and foreign partners like DOW Chemical. It also collaborates with Texas A & M University and State University of Campinas (Brazil) in the area of Renewable Energy looking at production of first, second and third generation biofuels, simulation and process control applied to refineries and biorefineries, exergy, life cycle analysis and economic analysis of existing and emerging technologies, carrying out projects funded by UPME, IPSE, ECOPETROL, COLCIENCIAS, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, ASOCAÑA and CYTED.
The Centre is aslo active in the experimental study of processes of production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass and value-added products from palm oil and algae and cultivation of microalgae.

Project Role

UIS will be responsible for completion of part of WP 1.
Additional tasks for UIS will be:

  • To support Project Coordinator in Project execution and monitoring the progress;
  • To work on the Project Network development in Colombia;
  • To take part in the modernisation and enhancing of the structure and syllabus of the selected modules on Renewable Energy on Bachelor and Master levels and distance improvement of Skills Development of PhD students doing research in Renewable Energy Area.
  • To work on setting up teaching laboratories and deriving the Laboratory work notes;
  • To implement the teaching process;
  • To implement quality assurance plan for all teaching methods and processes;
  • To actively participate in promotion and dissemination of project activities and results on local, national and international levels.

People (staff members)

Professor Viatcheslav V. Kafarov is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development in Industry and Energy and the Director of External Relations of the Industrial University of Santander, Colombia. Since joining the Industrial University of Santander in 1995 he developed research in the field of Renewable Energy, bio-diesel, bio-hydrogen, second and third generation biofuels production, sustainable development and Life Cycle Assessment for biofuels production, process integration and exergy analysis. He has been involved in numerous national and international research projects in biofuels and in sustainable development. He has supervised 12 PhD students and he is author and co-author of more than 80 papers and 7 books.

Dr. Ramiro Martinez Rey is a member of the Research Group CIDES. He has 15 years of experience in teaching Synthesis and Analysis of Chemical Processes modules in the graduate degrees course in Chemical Engineering. His research is related to refining and petrochemical. He has 10 papers published in international journals.

Dr. Gustavo Ramirez Caballero is a CIDES group member. He has a Ph.D degree from Texas A&M University in the area of system materials science and engineering. He has 3 years of experience in teaching Computational Engineering and Reactor Design in graduate courses in Chemical Engineering. His research is related to Materials Modeling for Renewable Energy applications. He has 6 papers published in international journals and 1 book chapters.

Professor Crisostomo Barajas Ferreira is the CIDES research group Vice Coordinator. He has 20 years of experience in teaching Unit Operations and
Methods in Chemical Engineering in Graduate Degree Courses in Chemical Engineering. His research is related to biomass process simulation. He has more than 12 papers published in international journals.
