The Universidad de Santander (UDES) is an institution of highereducation with more than 30 years of experience in education and research. The University has strategic objectives to improve the quality of education, to strengthen research, to be actively involved into the social and productive activities, to consolidate the information and communication technologies as models for education management and administrative modernization. Fostering the internationalisation constitutes a strategic goal of the UDES in order to be accredited globally as a high quality Higher Education Institution.
The UDES educates professionals with comprehensive competencies in different knowledge fields. On the campus the UDESoffers 87 academics programs in health, social, administrative and agricultural sciences, engineering, law, marketing and advertising. The University has a modern Technological Studies and Online Center with 29 programs.
The UDES is a leading University in the north-eas tregion of Colombia having campuses in four principal cities of the country: Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cúcuta and Valledupar. This advantage allows the University to constitute an important high education center in the region and contributing decisively to the social, political, economic and environmental development of the country.
Recently, the UDES has been recognized as one of the leading Universities in Colombia for sustainable development. UDES has a Master Program in Renewable Energies and Rational Use of Energy, called Advanced Energy Systems (MSEA) and It is planning an undergraduate program of Energy Engineering. There are undergraduate programs in Environmental, Electronics, Industrial and Civil Engineering, and Microbiology, which are relevant to this Master´s Program. UDES has academic collaboration agreements with several international institutions.
UDES will be responsible for completion of part of WP 2.
Additional tasks for UDES will be:
- To support Project Coordinator in Project execution and monitoring the progress;
- To work on the Project Network development in Colombia;
- To take part in the modernisation and enhancing of the structure and syllabus of the selected modules on Renewable Energy on Bachelor and Master levels and distance improvement of Skills Development of PhD students doing research in Renewable Energy Area.
- To work on setting up teaching laboratories and deriving the Laboratory work notes;
- To implement the teaching process;
- To implement quality assurance plan for all teaching methods and processes;
- To actively participate in promotion and dissemination of project activities and results on local, national and international levels.

Prof. Gilberto Carrillo-Caicedo has been Director of Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications School, Dean of Engineering and Rector of the Industrial University of Santander and actually is the Director of the MSEA master´s Program at UDES. He has 38 years of experience in teaching, research and development of different types of engineering courses. He contributed to the creation of several Graduate programs. He has led many research projects for Colciencias, ISA, ESSA and CODENSA. He supervised several Master´s and Doctoral Thesis on Renewable Energy and Rational Use of Energy.
Mg. Jesus Manuel Epalza Contreras belongs to the Research Group GAIA at Universidad de Santander. His research and teaching is related to Environmental systems, Microbiology and Renewables. He has 2 patents for water treatment.
Mg. Jairo Blanco Serrano received the Bs. Eng in Electrical Engineering in 2009 and the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2012, all of them from the Universidad Industrial of Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia.
Currently, he is pursuing Phd studies in Electrical Engineering at Universidad Industrial of Santander. Also he is an Assistant Professor in Electrical machines, power systems and electrical distribution systems.
His research interests include: power quality, electromagnetic transients, modeling and simulation, smart metering, smart grids and optimization.
Mg. Iván David Serna Suárez is a doctoral candidate of the “Grupo de Investigación en Sistemas de Energía Eléctrica” at Universidad Industrial de Santander.
His research and teaching is related to power markets, Renewable Energy and power distribution modelling and simulation. His doctoral research is about the functionality of decentralized optimization/decision-taking in a power distribution system to capture the benefits of the local non-Renewable energy sources in a microgrid-like environment. For this, he is implementing a multiagent system with several low-cost computing boards (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Odroid-C1) to test the algorithms.
